Now you
can measure
your performance
with added weight.
Weighted vests, ruck packs, and other weighted wearables can be excellent tools for exercise. They can help you step up your training or get more out of the activities you already do: walking, running, hiking.
But how do you measure your performance and track your progress over time when moving with added weight?
Meet Weightpace.
A universal metric.
Speed describes how fast you move. Pace describes how long each mile or kilometer takes. Weightpace accounts for the external load you carry.
Speed
Distance ÷ Time
mph · km/h
Pace
Time ÷ Distance
min/mi · min/km
Weightpace
Load × Distance ÷ Time
WP

How to read it.
Higher WP means better performance when moving under load. The 5K examples show how that number changes. WP increases when you carry more load, move at a faster pace, or both.
5K Examples
5K + 20 lb at 15:00/mi = 80 WP
(20 lb × 3.11 mi ÷ 0.78 hr)
5K + 30 lb at 15:00/mi = 120 WP
(30 lb × 3.11 mi ÷ 0.78 hr)
5K + 20 lb at 12:00/mi = 100 WP
(20 lb × 3.11 mi ÷ 0.62 hr)
5K + 30 lb at 12:00/mi = 150 WP
(30 lb × 3.11 mi ÷ 0.62 hr)
100 WP Examples
3 mi + 15 lb at 9:00/mi = 100 WP
(15 lb × 3 mi ÷ 0.45 hr)
5 mi + 20 lb at 12:00/mi = 100 WP
(20 lb × 5 mi ÷ 1 hr)
4 mi + 25 lb at 15:00/mi = 100 WP
(25 lb × 4 mi ÷ 1 hr)
2.5 mi + 40 lb at 24:00/mi = 100 WP
(40 lb × 2.5 mi ÷ 1 hr)
Think of the 100 WP examples the way you think about speed. You can travel 5 miles in 1 hour or 10 miles in 2 hours. Both average 5 mph. Weightpace works the same way, but also includes the load you carry.
WP does not capture total effort, terrain difficulty, or physiological strain. The same WP does not mean the same effort.
Build your benchmark.
Your first WP gives you something you did not have before: a benchmark for your performance under load. Repeat similar activities and see how your performance under load changes over time.
First Activity
20 lb · 3 mi · 45 min · 15:00/mi
(20 lb × 3 mi ÷ 0.75 hr)
80 WP
Second Activity
20 lb · 3 mi · 40 min · 13:20/mi
(20 lb × 3 mi ÷ 0.67 hr)
90 WP

Put it into practice.
Weightpace training programs provide structured distance goals for movement under load. Choose a distance that fits your ability, complete each program day, and track your performance.
Foundation
1K-5 → 5 Days (0.62 mi/day)
2K-5 → 5 Days (1.24 mi/day)
3K-5 → 5 Days (1.86 mi/day)
Performance
4K-4 → 4 Days (2.49 mi/day)
5K-4 → 4 Days (3.11 mi/day)
6K-4 → 4 Days (3.73 mi/day)
Endurance
10K-3 → 3 Days (6.21 mi/day)
HALF-2 → 2 Days (13.1 mi/day)
FULL-1 → 1 Day (26.2 mi/day)
Programs prescribe distance, not load. You choose the load appropriate for your experience and ability.
